Can Reiki help if you’re grieving? Finding some relief after loss

Grief is rarely predictable or quiet. It doesn't just sit in our minds as memories, it lives in our bodies. It shows up as a tight chest, a knot in the stomach, exhaustion or that heavy, constant lump in your throat.

When you are navigating loss, people often tell you to "be strong" or "give it time" or worse still, to “get over it”. But when you’ve been putting on a brave face for everyone else and trying to fulfil every expectation, where do you go when you just need to stop holding it all together for a bit?

If you've been wondering whether energy modalities like Reiki can help when you are grieving, the short answer is yes. Not by rushing your healing, bypassing your emotions or "fixing" your sadness, but by offering your nervous system a safe place to rest and release.

I know what it means to carry heavy grief

When I lost my daughter in 2003, followed by the passing of my parents in subsequent years, grief completely reshaped my world. For a long time, I did what so many people do: I played the "good girl," kept my head down, and put on a brave face while struggling through a high-stress corporate finance job. On the outside, I was managing. On the inside, the grief, anger, anxiety and exhaustion were taking a massive physical and emotional toll on my body.

My very first Reiki session after losing my daughter was a turning point. It was the first time in a long time that my whirlwind of emotions finally quietened down. It didn’t magically erase my grief, but it gave my nervous system a moment of total, peaceful surrender. That relief was what eventually led me down the path of learning Reiki, Tibetan Sound Healing, and intuition; first to heal myself, and now to hold space for others.

How grief lives in the energy body

Grief is one of the heaviest emotional experiences we can carry. Spiritually and energetically, loss can leave you feeling completely ungrounded, disconnected from your body, and emotionally numb.

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive form of energy healing that works directly with your body’s subtle energy fields. During grief, your nervous system is often stuck in a prolonged state of "fight, flight, or freeze." Energy work helps by:

  • Slowing down a racing mind: Guiding your nervous system out of stress mode and into restorative rest.

  • Creating a safe emotional container: Giving you permission to feel, cry, or simply lay still without having to explain yourself or pretend you're "fine."

  • Releasing stored emotional tension: Gentle placement of hands (or energy in online sessions) helps soften stagnant energy held tightly in the heart and throat areas (and often, other chakras too).

  • Restoring subtle vitality: An energy healing session helps replenish you when carrying silent sorrow has left you feeling completely drained.

What to expect in a session when you're carrying loss

One of the biggest fears people have when coming to a session while grieving is: "What if I break down and cry?"

In my space, tears are not just welcomed, they are honoured. There is no expectation for you to hold back, put on a smile, or perform for anyone, especially me. I’ve had many clients who cry, express frustration and it’s all absolutely ok. You don’t have to put on a brave face for me.

Your grief journey isn't about rushing you through your process or trying to smooth over your pain. It’s about hearing the whispers of your soul. Honouring what you need. My mission is to give you a warm, grounded space where you can finally take a deep breath, drop the heavy burdens you’ve been carrying, and start coming home to yourself.
